SA vehicle registration

SA Vehicle Registration 2024 | Register Your Car in South Australia Now

If you want to register a new vehicle in SA, you will have to visit a Service SA center with the right documents.

Light Vehicles

You will have to complete an application for SA Vehicle Registration, third-party insurance, and proof of purchase. The proof of purchase can be any evidence of purchase from a motor vehicle dealership, such as an invoice. The invoice must outline the details of the vehicle, such as model, make, etc. It should also include the vehicle identification number (VIN) and match the details provided in the application for registration.

An identity inspection will be required if you are not able to provide proof of purchase. You will also have to pay the applicable registration fees and the stamp duty on the vehicle value.

Heavy Vehicles

Information required for a heavy trailer will include the trailer’s gross trailer mass (GTM). This information should be included on the trailer identification plate that was previously known as a compliance plate. Moreover, an inspection may be required when the vehicles are to be operated as restricted access vehicles.

Transfer a Vehicle Registration

If you are a new buyer or owner of an SA-registered vehicle such as a car, motorcycle, caravan, or trailer, you will have to transfer the registration within 14 days, and it will cost a fee of $31. If not, then you will have to pay a late transfer fee of $99. You will also have to pay for stamp duty; however, it does not apply to caravans or trailers with a GTM of 4.5 tons or less. If you are the seller of the car, then the process would be different.

Reasons When You Can’t Transfer Online

Online transfers may not be possible if:

  • The vehicle is unregistered.
  • The vehicle is from interstate.
  • The vehicle is conditionally registered.
  • The registration is being transferred between partners.
  • The registration is as a deceased estate.
  • If you are eligible for a registration concession and would like to apply for a vehicle.
  • If new number plates are required.

A change of ownership inspection is required due to it being a heavy trailer or vehicle that is 3 years or older than the date of manufacture

Proof of Ownership

A legal ownership of the vehicle is not provided by the registration certificate. If you are the buyer of the vehicle, then it is recommended that you obtain proof of purchase, i.e., a receipt. The receipt should include the following:

  • Your name, signature, and address
  • Seller’s name, signature, and address
  • Vehicle details, including plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), engine number, make, and model
  • Details of the sale, such as the date and price paid

Registering an Interstate Vehicle

If you have moved from interstate to South Australia or you have purchased an interstate vehicle, then you will need to register your vehicle, including a car, motorcycle, caravan, or trailer, in SA within 3 months. An interstate-registered vehicle can be driven in South Australia for up to 90 days including visitors.

Relocating Vehicle from Interstate to SA

You can drive a vehicle from Interstate to SA by ensuring that the vehicle is displaying number plates and is currently registered. If the vehicle is not displaying number plates or the vehicle is unregistered, you will have to apply and get an unregistered vehicle permit from the interstate authority where the vehicle is being relocated now.

After you pay the registration fee, you will be issued a set of number plates. You have to make sure to attach them to your vehicle on the same day you receive them. Provided you keep the receipt with you, you can drive the vehicle home without the number plates.

SA Vehicle Registration of Expired SA Second-Hand Vehicle

When you get an unregistered South Australian vehicle, such as a motorcycle, trailer, or caravan, you should apply to register the vehicle in your name before using it on the road. You will need to pay the registration fees and the stamp duty. To register an expired SA vehicle, you should:

  • Hold an SA driver’s license
  • Have previously registered a vehicle in SA in your name
  • Be registering a vehicle that was registered in SA previously

A change of ownership inspection will also be required if the vehicle has an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) or gross vehicle mass (GVM) over 4.5 tons. It should also be 3 or more years older than the date of manufacture.

Replacing the Vehicle’s Registration Certificate

If you are selling or purchasing a vehicle, such as a caravan, car, trailer, or motorcycle, you no longer need a registration certificate. Then, you can complete a transfer of registration or notice of disposal form online. You will have to pay a $20 fee for a replacement certificate for your vehicle. You are also offered access to a copy of your registration receipt for any vehicle registered in your name.

Cancel Registration and Claim a Refund

You are allowed to cancel the registration of your vehicle, motorcycle, or trailer and reclaim the cost of unused registration. If you have a mySAGOV account, then you can also cancel your registration online by:

  • Claiming the unused portion of registration for a vehicle that you have sold.
  • Temporarily unregistering a vehicle that you plan to re-register within 12 months.

To cancel online, you need to follow the given steps:
